WHAT IS SEROTONIN?
LET’S TALK ABOUT SEROTONIN
So, what is serotonin?
Serotonin is a crucial hormone that helps us to balance our feelings, mood, and calmness. It’s also known as the happy hormone. Research shows that people with bulimia have low levels of serotonin.
It has many functions:
• It helps parts of the brain to communicate with other parts of the brain and body healthily
• It helps you to sleep
• It works with your digestion
• It helps to control the muscles and how you move
• It influences your bowel movements and appetite
But low levels of serotonin cause feelings of depression, anxiety, cravings of sweet foods, and disrupts your sleep patterns.
To naturally increase your serotonin:
- Spend more time in the sunlight, which could be tricky if you live in the UK in the winter; you’re more likely to drown in the rain rather than get sunstroke!
- Exercise helps to boost your serotonin. But exercise within reason.
- Massage helps increase serotonin and dopamine, another mood-related neurotransmitter. It also decreases cortisol, which is a hormone your body produces when you’re anxious or stressed.
We want more serotonin!
When your serotonin levels are at a healthy level, you’ll feel more emotionally stable, more focused, calmer, and guess what?
HAPPIER.
