RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS

Due to malnutrition, clients with bulimia are much more likely to suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Visiting a nutritionist would be hugely beneficial in your recovery.

Probiotics

Even before visiting a nutritionist, it would be a great idea to start taking probiotics. These live bacteria help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your gut (including your stomach and intestines). Within these, there are good and bad bacteria; people with bulimia may have a low number of good bacteria.

It would be beneficial to begin taking probiotics to build on the good bacteria and reduce gases and cravings of carbohydrates and sugar caused by the harmful bacteria. You can get probiotics from supplements as well as from foods such as yogurts.

Here are further supplements you may wish to add to your meal plan, although consult your doctor or nutritionist before doing so:

A daily multivitamin

Many people feel the benefits by taking a high-quality daily multivitamin containing the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E, B vitamins, and trace minerals such as magnesium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, and copper. Make sure the multivitamin has a balance B complex. This is useful in helping the body cope with stress.

Omega-3 oils

Omega-3 is not only good for helping ease anxiety and stress but also has many other reported health benefits such as lowering blood pressure and possibly reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

Calcium

Most bulimics are low in calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. It would be a good idea to increase your calcium consumption through supplements and with vitamin D (which helps the absorption of the calcium) and in your structured eating program, such as cabbage, spinach, and broccoli, and then with calcium supplements.

Zinc

One five-year study showed an astounding 85% recovery rate from bulimia in patients given zinc supplementation. It concluded that zinc supplementation resulted in weight restoration, better body function, and improved outlook.

Potassium

Most bulimics are deficient in potassium, which is essential for the correct functioning of the heart, kidneys, muscles, nerves, and digestive system. Therefore, potassium supplements would be beneficial to investigate. In your structured eating program, increase foods high in potassium such as bananas, oranges, apricots, tuna, beef, chicken, sardines, and salmon, avocado, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, cabbage.

Magnesium

This is an electrolyte that’s essential for maintaining a healthy heart. Taking magnesium supplements are great for muscle tension, insomnia, and heart palpitations.
